Over the past two years Gay Island Guide has grown to not only be recognized locally but internationally with what appears to be the largest social media presence and following. In fact, from being at this Waikiki bar frequently throughout the week he heard a series of common questions asked of bar staff “what are the other bars? Where can we go? What should we do? How do we get there?” and that is when he launched the very first page (The Bar Page) of, complete with a Google Map of the Waikiki bars. In May of 2016, Gay Island Guide Founder Walter Enriquez, Jr., who was consulting for a major local LGBTQ+ bar recognized that there now was a void to connect both the local and visitor community to Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations and to disseminate information to the public. Like so many others even today print publications are battling and in many cases losing that battle to online publications and access to information instantly through social media and other platforms. On Decemand April 30, 2016, Hawaii lost both of its active LGBTQ+ publications – Odyssey Magazine and Expressions Magazine respectively.
